In this employee spotlight, see what a day in the life looks like for Amelia Gladden, Sales Recruiter at Verkada. (And if you’re interested in joining us in our mission of making the world safer, check out our open positions!)
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role?
My name is Amelia and I’ve been at Verkada for almost 2 years! Prior to this, I was at Reflektive, Tinder and The Honest Company in people-focused roles. My main goal here as a Sales Recruiter is to find talented people who are passionate about our mission — and then get them to join our growing team. We look for individuals that are fast learners, team players and have the drive and ambition to steer their own ship. We’re all working towards the same goal and we hope to hire people who can grow and contribute to those targets.
What does your day-to-day as a Sales Recruiter look like?
The first thing I do when I come in is and order a cup of tea from our barista to get me ready for the day. Then I will go into checking my email and check for any updates. From there, I’m pretty much in back-to-back calls and meetings. Towards the end of the day, I typically try to do lots of sourcing before signing out for the night. At Verkada, I have the freedom to be creative in how you want to grow in your role and it’s great to check-ins along the way with an energetic and dedicated leaders.
What do you look forward to everyday that you come in?
Working here is so easy, and it’s because of the people. You get to know people really quickly and you have a lot of opportunity to ask questions and dive deeper. Everyone has their own piece that they bring to the table and everyone comes from different backgrounds. Everyday is an opportunity to learn from other people, whether that’s day to day life experiences, the work that we do, or how it all relates to our product. We brought in some really talented people that have taught me things that I would have had to read a whole book on. You can put one-on-one time with your manager or one-on-one time with anyone outside of your department, and everyone makes time for each other.
“We’re not up against each other– we’re working towards the same goal and we’re all able to help each other, which is what I really like about working here.”
The Verkada product was also something that drew me to work here. They’re taking security and flipping it on its head to create a completely new type of security system. The main thing for me was really the safety aspect of it. Whether it’s with schools or businesses, there are a lot of different instances of our products saving people’s lives. That is a huge driver for me, I want to work for a company where you’re making a difference, and Verkada is truly out there making a difference in the world, not just here in the U.S, not just in the Valley– all over the world.
Who has taken a special interest in your success and development?
I would say our Director of Sales Recruiting really cares about our growth. It feels like you have a very personal relationship with that person, even though they have 30 people underneath them. It never feels like you’re just a number. They see the hard work that you put in and they reward you for that; but they also challenge you. The directors always check in on you to ask if there’s other things that you would want to learn or take on.
“They also ask if this is the right path for you or if you want to try a different path, and really focus on your long-term goals. I feel that they really understand you and want to put you in the right place instead of just pushing you to do something you don’t want to do.”
What are you most proud of achieving at Verkada?
I came in knowing how to do recruiting, but I wasn’t doing the full cycle recruiter role. I was learning from the ground up and making sure I put time on all the managers calendars and learned from just doing. When I was three quarters in, I won recruiter of the quarter. I realized there are so many different ways that you can be good at your job, and that Verkada really looks at you holistically. I was shocked that I hit way above my number and I was able to also work on other projects at the same time. The opportunity and the growth here is exponential.
Another proud feeling that I get is from seeing how the sales reps I’ve recruited grow within Verkada. I’m so invested whenever they close the deal that they have been working on and seeing all the friends that they’ve made here. I relocated at least three different reps from all over the U.S and just seeing them create a whole family in the Bay Area is really exciting. I think it’s the continued progression of how they do and where they go that makes me proud.
