What is it like to be a product marketer at Verkada?

When I think about the function of product marketing, it is very much a hub-and-spoke model, with product marketing sitting central to many different parts across the organization. With this approach, product marketing can play a significant role in how updates and business strategies are communicated across the rest of the business.

As with many product marketing functions, this started with thinking about go-to-market. When I joined Verkada, we were selling just four different camera models. Today, we’ve grown that number to 16, as well as introducing two new product verticals in access control and environmental monitoring.

When I joined in the early stages of the company, it was important for me to immediately start to build relationships across the organization and create efficient paths to collaboration. This included building those initial bridges with teams across marketing, product, engineering and sales. The end goal was to find processes that worked for stakeholders as well withstand the growth and scale we were expecting across products, employee headcount and customers.

At the start, this included everything from creating content for blogs, documents, positioning and messaging, as well as training for our internal teams and partners. As the organization grew, product marketing has become a stakeholder in many of these processes, with new teams taking over more of the day-to-day processes.

What gets you motivated to work everyday?

From the very first day I interviewed at Verkada, I’ve been motivated by the mission and opportunity that our solution provides. As a product marketer, it’s important for me to work on products that make a difference in people’s lives — whether that is something that makes their day easier or safer. Luckily at Verkada, I get to work on both.

Even over the last several months, we have released so many new features that continue this mission. As a product marketer, I get to tell and share this growing story that never takes a step back, but always moves the product, business and mission forward. And at the end of the day, customers recognize that, too, and they get excited about what’s next.

How would you describe the culture of your team?

When I think about successful marketing organizations, you need to have a mix of passion, creativity and empathy. Immediately when I met everyone on the team, it was clear that all three of those boxes were checked with everyone providing a little bit something extra of their own. That mixture of team camaraderie and individuality made me feel like this was a perfect fit.

Every single day, it is clear to me that I’m surrounded by people that want to push boundaries. And as the saying goes, a rising tide lifts all boats. That’s certainly true here. We’re not a group of people that settle — we strive to challenge each other and ourselves to always be better. And that goes equally for the growth of our team, as well as what we deliver across the organization and to our customers.

“As the team has grown, what has been truly special is that mentality from day one hasn’t changed. We’re really a family, and we’re here to support one another. The relationships I’ve built within the marketing team as well as across the company are the kind that I know I’m going to continue not just today at Verkada, but also beyond.”

What excites you about the future of Verkada?

Honestly, it’s that we’re just getting started. Over the last two years, I’ve seen just how much this company has grown. For anyone that has built a company, you know just how hard it is to do something like launch a second product line. The fact that we were able to launch not just one, but two, within months of one another speaks volumes to where Verkada is going.

Our mission is to modernize buildings. And I think for anyone that has spent a day within the walls of Verkada, it’s clear that the mission is very much in line of sight. From our team to our customers and partners, everyone is passionate about what we’re trying to solve.

For a product marketer, that is especially exciting because it means there is still so much to build and deliver. I can’t wait for tomorrow.
